Weekend: Sweet Eagle, "Dog Sees God," Brown Soul Shoes

FRIDAY 11/12

No stranger to the smoky Midtown Billiards corner stage, Josephus and the George Jonestown Massacre returns to Little Rock's infamous late-night bar, 12:30 a.m., $8 non-members.

White Water Tavern hosts a riff-heavy night of local bar rock from Little Rock supergroups Wicked Good and Sweet Eagle, 10 p.m.

Acoustic singer/songwriters abound this Friday night with Chris Henry holding down Grumpy's, 9 p.m., free; Dayton Waters at Markham Street Grill & Pub, 9 p.m.; Grayson Shelton at Cregeen's, 8:30 p.m., free; and Shannon McClung performing at Flying Saucer, 9 p.m.

"Dog Sees God" returns to satirize the "Peanuts" gang for a second weekend at The Weekend Theater, 7:30 p.m., $14.

SATURDAY 11/13

Known nationwide for his mastery of the clarinet, Robert Spring gives a recital at the University of Central Arkansas's Snow Fine Arts Center, 7:30 p.m.

White Water Tavern goes hard and heavy with a night of metal from local heroes Rwake, New York hardcore outfit Story of the Eye and sludge metal psychedelia from Pallbearer, 10 p.m.

Acoustic blues and soul duo Brown Soul Shoes play the hits at Markham Street Grill and Pub, 9 p.m.

And, as always, Discovery brings out the clubbers with music from radio favorite Kramer in the lobby, Lydia Prim in the techno room and DJ g-force spinning in the club's new hip-hop level, 10 p.m., $10.

Weekend To-Do: David Kimbrough Jr.

Weekend To-Do: David Kimbrough Jr.

Posted by John Tarpley on Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 6:01 AM

DAVID KIMBROUGH JR.
Fri.: 9 p.m., Parrot Beach Cafe. $5.
Sat.: 10 p.m., White Water Tavern.

Who should we talk to about making David Kimbrough Jr. an honorary Little Rockian? For years, he's been no stranger to stages around town. No doubt, he knows his way around Little Rock's barstools. And we can always use someone as flat-out fun to watch as the contagiously exuberant son of Junior Kimbrough, the eternal emperor of the Delta blues. What I'm getting at is this: Have you seen David Jr. yet? If not, it may be time to stop denying yourself the foot-stomping, butt-shaking good time he brings to town every time. This weekend sees a two-night stand in town, playing Parrot Beach Cafe on Friday night, supported by husband and wife duo Jawbone and Jolene, and his regular hang-out, White Water Tavern, at 10 p.m. Saturday, supported by singer/songwriter (and his blues co-conspirator) Stacey Mackey.

Weekend To-Do: "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead"

"DOG SEES GOD: CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE BLOCKHEAD"
7:30 p.m., The Weekend Theater. $10-$14.

It's a concept that has churned up a bit of controversy during its off- and off-off-Broadway runs, not to mention one that's guaranteed to strike you as either perverse, hilarious, or, if you're like me, a bit of both. Okay, so the "Peanuts" gang has grown up, bypassing the "lovable misfit" stage and going straight into "borderline sociopath" territory. Or at least "notably troubled." C.B.'s doing a little more than "good grief"-ing over Snoopy's death by rabies, his sister Sally has gone goth and their old football friends have blossomed into potheads, homophobes, hoes and institutionalized ne'er-do-wells. I shudder to think what the authors would subject "The Family Circus" clan to. "Dog Sees God" continues for the next three weekends, closing its run on Nov. 20.
