Sea lion show pulls in for performances at Gulf Coast Exploreum (with video, gallery)

Published: Tuesday, November 09, 2010, 7:01 PM ??? Updated: Tuesday, November 09, 2010, 10:47 PM

Put your flippers together to welcome Kim and Rose, the big stars at the Gulf Coast Exploreum’s Sea Lion Splash traveling exhibit.

Starting tomorrow and continuing through Nov. 21, the rescued South American sea lions will perform up to four shows a day from two pools and a stage across the street from the Exploreum at the corner of Government and Royal streets in downtown Mobile.

The sea lions will perform tricks during the 30-minute shows, guided by their trainers, Gala Rogacheva and Carl Kruger, who will also tell audiences about efforts to protect the animals.

To attend a show, buy an exhibit-only or a combo ticket to the Exploreum at the box office; a timed Sea Lion Splash ticket will be included. The admission includes general access to the Sea Lion Splash area in between shows, so that visitors may watch and photograph the sea lions.

Splash dates and times:?

Monday-Friday, 9 a.m., noon, 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 3:45 p.m.?

Sunday, 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Tickets: The Sea Lion Splash admission is included with general admission and combo admission tickets. (Note: there are no online sales for Sea Lion Splash.)

Prices: General admission: Adult, $16; youth, senior, $15; child, $14; $4 for Exploreum members. Combo tickets that include an IMAX film will also be available.

The Exploreum is expecting high demand for the Splash shows. The weekday morning slots, 9 a.m. and noon, already have quite a few school groups coming for each show, according to Hela Sheth, the Exploreum’s director of marketing and public relations.

For those who plan to come on a weekday, Sheth recommends the 3:30 p.m. show. But there will be plenty of seats for all the show times, she said.

Just as with the popular Bengal tiger shows in 2008, the gift shop will feature sea lion merchandise, including T-shirts, books and stuffed animals.

For more details, call 251-208-6873 or visit www.exploreum.com.

14 disrupt legitimate video clips to make your Halloween less fragrant vanilla

?The thing about rounding up scary music videos for Halloween is that so rarely are they actually scary; Michael Jackson as a zombie/werewolf/come hither teenager? Meh. Alice Cooper, GWAR, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Insane Clown Posse...NOT SCARY. Predictable and funny maybe, but goosefleshing? Disturbing? Meh.

Here are 14 videos that are legitimately scary, creepy, unsettling, violent, offensive, and not safe for most work places. Happy Halloween!

Gorgoroth, "Carving a Giant"

Just another day at the office for Gorgoroth; a lot of this is for real, used in their regular stage show (if that's ever to happen again).

Henry Rollins, "Liar"

I remember seeing this when I was a kid and thinking "awesome." That doesn't mean it's not scary (if you've ever seen the video of Rollins punching a Black Flag fan in the head you'll know what I mean).

HEALTH, "We Are Water"

Eric Wareheim used to be a bassist in a gothic hardcore band from Pennsylvania called Ink & Dagger. Now he stars in the weirdest show on television and makes little pieces of cinematic fuckery for great bands. The payoff here is pure revenge camp.

Aphex Twin, "Windowlicker"

Between Aphex Twin's brilliant, bizarre sensibilities and Chris Cunningham's askew take on compelling beauty you get one of the best videos of the last twenty years.

Pearl Jam, "Do The Evolution"

What's scarier than the truth?

Yeah Yeah Yeah, "Y Control"

The juxtaposition of Karen O's enthusiasm and the grey, bloodshot little school children makes for a fun-damentally creepy video.

Grateful Dead, "Touch of Grey"

?!

Genesis, "Land of Confusion"

EIGHTIES PUPPETS, THEY'RE TOO REAL. TOO REAL.

Tool, "Sober"

All children of the eighties got the bottom of their spine tickled by this video (and most of Tool's others). Poor little clay man.

Gravediggaz, "Diary of a Madman"

They were trying to.

Salem, "Piggyhog"

Sqqqqqqquirm.

Interpol, "Evil"

Again with the puppets, but this time with black-clad Manhattan gadflies providing the soundtrack.

Daft Punk, "Technologic"

It's not easy having our digireality refracted back at us, is it? Hits a little too close to home?

Pumpkin Dance!

In one million years, after the evolution of dance into purely psychological expression, they will still look back at Pumpkin Man and get confused. Moves for the ages.

EPIC Deadmau5 at Epic (video)

All Minneapolis youth population was mobilized yesterday evening and barely contained in the superclub downtown cavernous Epic, a line of reeling in the block in both directions. What are they for, you ask?? It is simple: a man in a giant mouse mask behind a DJ booth.

And it is extraordinary.

Granted, we old ravers who hold the Daft Punk and their live show in high esteem that our mothers, Deadmau5 event is just an evolution of what is come before it (and before that and so forth) .but m. Mau5 and his killer laser light show is something of the following, the synchronized display of synth lines if clean and precise you almost forgot that music and lasers are separate entities. Part of the wealth of this large window too, so colorful and massive and different, all ages from such special excitation masked only with performers behind controls can provide.

And no mistake, Deadmau5 itself is fun, too. Here's what he said on his Facebook: "" T Hank Minneapolis!, an experience so... at least now I know what look like 3,600 people in a place of 3000 cap.La next time we're the largest, promise.: D ".

If you missed it last night (and especially if you were there), discover the video captured by Minneapolis' own Chuck Love (The Love Network).

We have also two slide shows:
