Man shot to death on Hollingers Island; 3rd homicide for Mobile police in 3 days

A 28-year-old man was found shot to death on an industrial road in the south end of Hollinger’s Island late Saturday night, according to Mobile police.

Spokesman Officer Christopher Levy identified the victim as Sary Kinn. His death was the first homicide of the year for Mobile police and marked the third day in a row that they were called to handle a fatal shooting.

Levy said police got the call shortly after ?10:50 p.m. Saturday for a man down in the 7700 block of Deer River Road East. Responding officers found Kinn lying partly on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds, he said.

Kinn was pronounced dead on the scene.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday evening.

The spot where Kinn was discovered is on a curve about 200 yards east of the fork where Deer River Road East breaks off Deer River Road and eventually leads to the Millard Refrigerated Services plant on the north bank of the Theodore Industrial Canal.

About 100 yards east of the crime scene, a spur railroad line for CSX Transportation crosses the road.

The scene was marked with orange paint tracing the victim’s body, and a significant bloodstain was still visible on the pavement Sunday evening.

A handful of residences, including a home-based bait shop, are along Deer River Road.

Levy said it was too early in the investigation to determine if Kinn was shot to death at the scene or was shot elsewhere and left where he was found.

As of Sunday, no one had been arrested in the cases that occurred Thursday and Friday.

Ramon Tinson, 23, was killed in a car early Friday morning at Government Street and Dauphin Island Parkway in what police believe was a drive-by shooting.

On Thursday, 24-year-old Michael Watkins was found fatally shot by a car in a field near Abrams Street, Levy said. A second man was shot during that incident, and a third was recovered uninjured after being locked in the trunk of the car.

Police investigate four homicides in four days, including man slain Sunday who had ties to Thursday killing

MOBILE, Ala. -- A spate of four homicides in four days came full circle Sunday evening with the shooting death of a man who was closely tied to the Thursday killing.

The man, identified Sunday as 25-year-old Darius Longmire, was found by police Thursday locked in the trunk of a car.

Longmire was unharmed, but two men just outside the car had been shot, one of them fatally.

Then Sunday, police Officer Christopher Levy said, Longmire was fatally shot several times while in the 1500 block of Eagle Drive in the Birdville community, just north of Brookley Industrial Complex. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police got a report at 5 p.m. Sunday about a shooting on Eagle Drive, Levy said, and they found Longmire.

Less than a day earlier, 28-year-old Sary Kinn was found shot to death on an industrial road in the south end of Hollinger’s Island, according to police.

Levy said police got the call at 10:50 p.m. Saturday for a man down in the 7700 block of Deer River Road East. Responding officers found Kinn lying partly on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds, he said.

Early Friday morning, Ramon Tinson, 23, was killed in a car at Government Street and Dauphin Island Parkway in what police believe was a drive-by shooting.

There was also no evidence tying his death to any of the others, Levy said.

As of Sunday night, no arrests had been made in any of the four killings.

The man killed on Thursday was identified as Michael Watkins, 24, and the identity of the other man, who was shot in the face and did not die, was not released.

At the scene of the shootings, Longmire was found locked inside the trunk of an iridescent purple Chevrolet Caprice in a vacant lot off Abrams Street and Spring Hill Avenue, near Interstate 65.

Longmire was questioned by police, according to Levy.

Search for bodies of missing children begins Saturday; father arrested by Mobile police

MOBILE, Ala. -- Mobile police will begin searching Saturday for the bodies of two children — Jonathan Chase DeBlase and Natalie Alexis DeBlase — after their father, John Joseph DeBlase, blamed their stepmother for their suspected fate.

As two officers escorted DeBlase from police headquarters tonight, he accused the children’s stepmother when asked who killed them, and responded, “Don’t’ know,” when asked why.

DeBlase, 27, remained in the Mobile County Metro Jail late todaycharged with two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of abuse of a corpse.

Mobile police Chief Micheal T. Williams said tonight that police will bring in cadaver dogs to search an area that’s within 100 miles of Mobile.

“We are not sure exactly, but he has given us an indication of a location where they may be, or where he remembers burying the children,” Williams said, adding that police believe the children are dead. “Based on what he told us, we believe that.”

Williams said that DeBlase could face additional charges.

“We want to make sure we find these children and that they are buried properly with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Williams said.

The children’s stepmother, Heather Leavell-Keaton, remains jailed in Louisville, Ky., charged with two counts of willful child abuse.

Williams said he did not know when Leavell-Keaton would be brought to Mobile.

DeBlase was apprehended in Milton, Fla., late Thursday by a Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputy responding to a report of a suspicious person, according to a police report obtained by WKRG-TV Channel 5.

DeBlase was brought to Mobile, where he was being questioned this afternoon, according to police.

Jonathan, 3, and Natalie — whose birth date is given as Nov. 24, 2005, according the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website — have not been accounted for since July, police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said.

The search for DeBlase intensified this week after Leavell-Keaton, 22, was arrested in Kentucky and charged with two counts of willful child abuse in connection with an incident that occurred while she, the children and their father were living in west Mobile.

On Thursday night, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint about a suspicious person living at a home on Charles Circle, according to WKRG.

When the deputy arrived, the homeowner told him that DeBlase had been staying at the house for two days. The homeowner told the deputy that he called the Sheriff’s Department after hearing about the investigation into the children’s disappearance and DeBlase’s potential involvement.

According to the report, the homeowner had confronted DeBlase, who yelled, “I didn’t do it!” and fled.

The deputy took DeBlase into custody at an intersection just blocks from the home. The deputy wrote in his report that DeBlase “made a spontaneous statement of ‘I didn’t do it.’”

Mobile police moved DeBlase to police headquarters this afternoon, where he was questioned.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children posted online pictures of Natalie and Jonathan on Tuesday, listed them as “endangered missing.”

Mobile police sorting through tips on missing children last seen in July

Mobile police were receiving numerous calls Thursday as they kept up their search for two young siblings last seen in July.?

"The detectives are sorting through that information to see if any of it is helpful or not," said Officer Christopher Levy, a police spokesman.

The children’s stepmother remained jailed Thursday in Louisville, Ky., awaiting extradition on two counts of willful child abuse. Heather Leavell-Keaton, 22, was arrested in Louisville on Wednesday, and her bail was set at $50,000.

Mobile police are looking for Natalie Alexis Deblase, 5, and Jonathan Chase Deblase, 3.?

Their mother, who lives in Mobile, has met with detectives, Levy said. "She said she hasn’t seen them in over a year," Levy said.?

"The last place they were seen was in Mobile," Levy said.?

Police also are searching for John Deblase, 27, the children’s father.?

"Our understanding is that he lives in Kentucky and we have not located him. We would like to," Levy said.?

Concern for their welfare accelerated when a man believed to be a relative of Leavell-Keaton walked in to a police department in Kentucky and told officials that the children were dead.?

John Deblase, Leavell-Keaton and the two children were living at Peach Place Extended Inn on Jeff Hamilton Road in west Mobile until they moved out in late July, police have said.

The family left a forwarding address in Rome, Ga., officials said.?

Louisville officials said they were unsure when Leavell-Keaton would be transferred to Mobile. She has a court appearance in Louisville scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 10.?

Officer Carey Klain, a spokeswoman with the Louisville Metro Police Department, said that Leavell-Keaton made a report on Nov. 18 "reporting increasing violence in the home in mid-November, but there were no specifics."?

"We didn’t make an arrest because she didn’t give any specifics and we didn’t locate any injuries on her," said Alicia Smiley, another Louisville police spokeswoman.?

That report was not related to Leavell-Keaton’s arrest on Wednesday, Klain said.?

Klain said that Louisville detectives are not investigating the children’s disappearance.

Mobile police officer fires weapon during traffic stop

MOBILE, Alabama -- A Mobile police officer fired his service weapon Saturday afternoon at a man suspected of leaving the scene of a wreck on Airport Boulevard moments before, according to police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy.

The suspect, police said, was not injured.?

Levy did not release the suspect’s or the officer’s names Saturday night.?

According to Levy, two vehicles collided at Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Drive about 5 p.m., and one of the vehicles fled the scene. Minutes later, an investigating officer spotted the fleeing vehicle on the west Interstate 65 Service Road, and pulled the vehicle over.?

"He was speaking to the suspects, and what happened at this point is going to be part of the internal investigation," Levy said, "but the officer discharged his weapon."?

Levy said additional details were not available Saturday night, including whether anyone was injured in the wreck.?

He said that as of about 9:20 p.m., charges had not been filed against the suspect.

Driver abandons car in Burger King take-out lane, leads police on chase

MOBILE, Ala. -- A man was arrested early today after police said he bolted from a car at a fast-food take-out lane and led a police officer on a brief foot chase.

Dwayne Maguay Pettaway, 31, was charged?with altering the identification of a firearm, cocaine trafficking, two counts of cocaine possession, three counts of use and possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, second-degree marijuana possession and third-degree receiving stolen property, according to records at Mobile County Metro Jail. ?He was being?held without bail Thursday night.

Spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said the officer first spotted Pettaway’s car swerving on Government Boulevard around 1 a.m. and was preparing to stop it when Pettaway turned into the Burger King near Government Boulevard and Azalea Road.

The officer came around the back to watch the car, Levy said, and when Pettaway realized the officer was watching, he jumped from his car in the take-out lane.

After a brief foot chase, Pettaway was arrested. Levy said a small black bag in Pettaway’s possession had about $7,000 worth of crack cocaine, a stolen pistol and some marijuana.

Pettaway will appear Friday morning in Mobile County District Court.

Teenager arrested on burglary charge; homeowner shot at him, say police

MOBILE, Ala. -- Mobile police arrested a 17-year-old after a Wilmer Road homeowner shot at him as he was breaking in, officials said Wednesday in a news release.

Phillip Anthony Johnston remained in the Mobile County Metro Jail as of this evening, charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, according to jail records.

Police were called at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday for a burglary in progress in the 4400 block of Wilmer Road, officials said.

The homeowner saw Johnston attempting to come into the house through a window and a fired a shot at him, according to the release. The bullet didn’t hit the burglar, but he left the house, police said.

Johnston was found a few blocks away, police said.

Officers later determined that Johnston had burglarized a home in the 6800 block of Warrington Drive, entering with a gun and taking several items, police said. The Warrington Drive homeowner was not at home when that burglary occurred, officials said.
