Tuesday thread

Another paper sent to the printer. And, here, another open line for blog readers. I've been asked to note:

* Fort Smith, the nominal setting for the novel "True Grit" and the movies based on the book (though filming was done elsewhere in both cases), is working itself into a frenzy about the coming premiere of the Coen brothers' version of the flick. They are calling it Gritapalooza, which even has a Facebook page with contests, trivia and other stuff. From Jennifer Boulden at the Convention and Visitors Bureau:

As most of you know, Fort Smith is the setting for True Grit—the original novel, the 1969 John Wayne film, and now a new film adaptation from the Coen Brothers. To celebrate our city’s connection to this beloved material we’ve got a “True Gritapalooza” campaign underway on Facebook. From now until the film opens in Fort Smith on Dec. 22nd, we’re encouraging Fort Smith area True Grit fans to have fun with it. We’re hosting some fun contests, discussions, new & updates, and putting together a few off-the-wall real-life events in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, this “Gritapalooza” activity will garner Fort Smith some positive media publicity, make more people from outside Fort Smith aware that this is where they should visit to see the “real True Grit”, bolster future efforts to engage Hollywood in working with the Marshals Museum cause and other Fort Smith history projects, build our Fort Smith civic pride and have some fun along the way. The more Fort Smith embraces and celebrates our own True Grit, the more we will stand out as a more interesting place to visit, work and live.

Whether you’re a fan of the book or the John Wayne film, are looking forward to or are curious about the new film version, there’s a spot for you to participate in the Gritapalooza. If you’ve never seen the film, read the book, or heard of True Grit, that’s fine, too—join in anyway and see what all the hoopla is about. If you are not on Facebook but would like to stay abreast of any activities planned, let me know and I’ll make sure to keep you in the loop.

Please share what we’re doing with your friends and family, with our schools. We’d love to get a true cross-section of the community feeling proud to be from a place featured in a story that’s loved and seen worldwide, and there’s not a lot of time left before the opening to get the word out.
