Shortly after Angela Fleming was found dead by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Fleming’s son, John Brian Fleming, "admitted to shooting his mother," according to Mike Lambert, chief deputy sheriff.

Lambert said that he and Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith responded to a call about 9 p.m. Thursday night from a man who reported that John Fleming had "just told him that he’d killed his mother."

Lambert said that he and Smith went to Angela Susanne Fleming’s house at 805 McGowin Hill Road, in the Damascus community just outside Brewton.

"Upon arrival," said Lambert, "we found the body" of the victim.

Lambert said that Angela Fleming, 46, "had been shot with a high-powered rifle."

John Fleming, said Lambert, "had returned to the scene of the crime. We believe he was trying to dispose of the body and flee."

The law officers, said Lambert, were able to take Fleming "into custody. He did not resist."

"He admitted to shooting his mother as soon as we grabbed him," said Lambert.

According to Lambert, Fleming said, "That’s my mother, and I shot her and killed her."

Lambert said that Fleming, who is in his early 20s, is charged with an open count of murder.

"We’re investigating to see if we can charge him with capital murder," Lambert said.

Lambert said that "the case is still under investigation."

He said Lambert remained in custody "awaiting a bond setting."
