Mobile police officer fires weapon during traffic stop

MOBILE, Alabama -- A Mobile police officer fired his service weapon Saturday afternoon at a man suspected of leaving the scene of a wreck on Airport Boulevard moments before, according to police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy.

The suspect, police said, was not injured.?

Levy did not release the suspect’s or the officer’s names Saturday night.?

According to Levy, two vehicles collided at Airport Boulevard and Montlimar Drive about 5 p.m., and one of the vehicles fled the scene. Minutes later, an investigating officer spotted the fleeing vehicle on the west Interstate 65 Service Road, and pulled the vehicle over.?

"He was speaking to the suspects, and what happened at this point is going to be part of the internal investigation," Levy said, "but the officer discharged his weapon."?

Levy said additional details were not available Saturday night, including whether anyone was injured in the wreck.?

He said that as of about 9:20 p.m., charges had not been filed against the suspect.
