FRISCO CITY, Ala. -- An 83-year-old grandmother found dead in the carport of her rural Monroe County home on Thursday died after her attacker landed three blows to her head — one delivered with enough force to fracture her skull, according to investigators.

Monroe County District Attorney Tommy Chapman said today that preliminary autopsy results indicated Annie Jean Norris, mother of Monroe County Probate Judge Gregg Norris, suffered three blunt force blows to the head in the attack sometime Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbors said they first knew something was wrong when Norris failed to arrive for church services that evening. The next day one of her four sons found their mother dead.

Authorities said Norris had apparently been attacked as she unloaded her car from a shopping trip to Walmart in Monroeville. The backdoor had not been unlocked, and investigators said her purse and other valuables had not been taken.

“We are trying to determine a motive here,” Chapman said. “We are following leads and asking for the public to help us solve this homicide.”

Anyone with information should call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 251-575-2963.

Authorities today were still combing the area for clues and interviewing people in the close-knit rural community. Chapman cautioned area residents to be careful and be wary.

Funeral services for Norris were set for today at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Frisco City. Visitation takes place from 1:30 p.m. until the service.
