Pat O'Brien goes out with a bang

Make that bang the sound of 17 gavels.

I've been avoiding this because of a personal involvement, but Stephen Steed has now broken the story in the Arkansas Leader of some turmoil at the Pulaski County Courthouse.

Circuit Clerk O'Brien has been moving legal filings on-line. He's ready to go paperless, to the point of shredding existing paper files. The judges (one of them is my wife) have said they don't think the on-line system is sound enough to destroy all paper copies just yet. O'Brien said he was going to do it anyway. All 17 judges then signed an order to prevent it. His successor, Larry Crane, who takes office Jan. 1, has told the judges he'll delay paper destruction until judges have total confidence in the system. O'Brien says he'll go to the Supreme Court to appeal the order.
