FRISCO CITY, Ala. -- The body of the 83-year-old mother of Monroe County Probate Judge Greg Norris, the victim of an apparent beating, was found in her carport today, authorities said.

Neighbors identified the victim as Annie Jean Norris. No arrests had been made as of Thursday night.

According to a statement from District Attorney Tommy Chapman, she was believed to have been killed between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday outside her home, south of Frisco City.

While the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences had not determined the cause of death, Chapman said she appeared to have been severely beaten.

Chapman said she had just arrived home from a shopping trip to the Walmart in Monroeville, about nine miles north of her home on Norris Avenue in a neighborhood just off Ala. 21 between Frisco City and Megargel.

She appeared to be unloading her car and had not yet unlocked the back door of her house when she was attacked, Chapman said. Her body was found about midday today by another son. She lived alone.

Nothing appeared to be taken, according to Chapman, and her purse was found at the scene.

Greg Norris is in his first term as Monroe County’s probate judge. He was elected in 2006 in a multi-candidate campaign to replace retiring Probate Judge Otha Lee Biggs.

Anyone with information about the death is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 251-575-2635.
